The Mangoettes and I are on the road to Grandma's house for Christmas. We'll keep you posted on our travels. Mango's will be closed both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so that the hard working Mango's staff can enjoy some quality holiday time with their families.

Since we're heading south we made another stop in Richmond to hit Chockoe slip for a little dinner and to check out the lights.

Strange Holiday Tomorrow

National Flashlight Day

When : Always December 21

Don't be left in the dark on National Flashlight Day. The basic requirement for this day, is a flashlight and good batteries. Flick the switch, and you can put anything into your spotlight.

We'd like to shed a little light on this special day. National Flashlight Day arrives on Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day...and longest night.... of the year. "Watt" that means, is that there's lots and lots of darkness. With all of those dark hours, your flashlight is apt to get a good workout.

You never know when you will need a flashlight. National Flashlight Day is a good day to make sure you and your family know where the flashlights are. Test each flashlight, to be sure the batteries are good. When in doubt, replace the batteries with new ones. It is also a good idea to put a flashlight in your car.

Did You Know? The flashlight was invented in 1898 by Joshua Lionel Cowen. However, this wasn't his greatest invention. He also invented the Lionel train.

Butane Burner

We use these all the time during brunch and for catering sessions. I have three in the camper and we routinely use them to make omelletes for the masses. Powered by butane they generate a great deal of heat, easily boiling water. One butane can lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra Concert

In the spirit of Christmas I took the Mangoettes to see the Trans Siberian Orchestra at the Verizon Center Sunday night.

This concert was the best Christmas concert I've ever attended. No strike that, it's the best CONCERT I've ever attended. Most over the top lighting show ever! LED's, lasers, strobes, pyrotechnics, you name the lighting and it was used. If you're looking for a entertaining, high energy Christmas show - this is the one to attend.

Even the teenage Mangoette's enjoyed the almost 3 hour show.

Buddies Christmas Dinner

This is the time of year you need to make time to get together with some of those long time friends. With my buddies Ron Buro and Rob ZImmerman, we try to get together once a year for the annual Buddies Christmas Dinner.

This year we fired up the RV and headed down to Richmond for dinner and a little southern sightseeing.

Mango at the wheel of the camper.

After dinner we headed up to a KOA campground in Fredericksburg for a bonfire, cigars and a lot of lies.

Tobacco Warehouse

We had a nice dinner at the Tobacco Warehouse. Thanks to the boys for picking up the tab. Great decorations with a stunning 20' Christmas tree jutting up from the bar into the atrium area.

The Plaza

Right on Carey Street up from Choco Slip.

The city does a great job of seasonal decorating. Plus having the major buildings in town outlined with white lights is impressive. Especially if you're heading into town via I-95.

Regular Customers

Mango Mikes has always been a fun place for everyone and that is evident by taking a look at our regular customer base. Many bars in the west end have a "cliky" regular customer base that is very unwelcoming of newcomers. One thing that I have always been proud about is that Mango Mike's is a very diverse and mixed hangout, people of all races, ages and economic backgrounds feel welcomed by our Carribbean atmosphere and patronize us quite regularly. There isn't that "your type isn't welcome" vibe you might get in other Northern Virginia Bars. If you're new to the area, it is easy break in with just a few visits, most likely Andres and the bar staff will remember your name, face and drink after just two trips. Just like the song goes "you want to go where everbody knows your name". Very true.

Happy Hour Drink Specials

Guests sometimes ask why we do not have our happy hour drink specials listed online at MangoMikes.com. The Virginia Alcohol Control Board has set laws that prevent us from doing so.
Retail licensees cannot advertise
alcoholic beverages in exterior
windows or anywhere in the
store or restaurant interior that
is visible from the outside,
except on table menus or newspaper
tear sheets.
[3 VAC 5-20-30.2].
You cannot advertise Happy
Hour in the media or on the
exterior of the premises.
[3 VAC 5-50-160.B]

This is why you never see neon beer signs in the windows of bars in Virginia. This also prohibits us from listing our drink specials on websites and blogs, however Ontap Magazine publishes a list of Happy Hour specials in the Metro area. You can check that out here:

RumNog Pecan Cookies

From the Food Section of the Washington Post - we may be making these soon at Mango', or you can make them and we'll trade for some Rum inspired cocktails.

Rummy, nutty and chewy, these would be delicious even without the icing, which adds sweetness and a second punch of rum flavor. Rum extract, which contains a trace of the alcohol found in rum, or apple cider can be substituted for the rum.

World's Most Disgusting Shooter

We had the annual Mango Mike's, Ramparts, Simply Fish Staff Christmas Party on Sunday night and it wouldn't be complete if Andres didn't pour the famous Dirty Ashtray Sambucca Shooter. Invented in 1985 at the Eastport Raw Bar during a lull in the action on evening as the bar staff/manager/owner we're trying to concoct the world's most disgusting shooter. The only caveat was that you could remove the butts as they were tough to digest.

More pixs of that evening forthcoming.

WI-FI Detector Shirt

Perfect gift for the web surfing addict in the family. And you know who you are.

Wi-Fi Detector Shirt — Signal Status for You and the World!
Here at ThinkGeek we're pretty lazy when it comes to technology. We expect our gadgets to do all the busywork while we focus on the high level important tasks like reading blogs. That's why we hate to have to crack open our laptops just to see if there is any wi-fi internet access about... and keychain wi-fi detectors, we would have to actually remove them from our pockets to look at them. But now thanks to the ingenious ThinkGeek robot monkeys you can display the current wi-fi signal strength to yourself and everyone around you with this stylish Wi-Fi Detector Shirt. The glowing bars on the front of the shirt dynamically change as the surrounding wi-fi signal strength fluctuates. Finally you can get the attention you deserve as others bow to you as their reverential wi-fi god, while geeky chicks swoon at your presence. You can thank us later.

Product Features:

Glowing animated shirt dynamically displays the current wi-fi signal strength

Animated decal is removable (Velcro fasteners) for easy washing

Battery pack is concealed in a small pocket sewn inside the shirt

Runs for hours off three AAA batteries (not included)

Alexandria Events

Forget the Mall...Hit the Park for some past Christmas History

Saturday 12 - 4 in Fort Ward Park

Fort Ward Museum to Host “Christmas in Camp”

Learn how Christmas was observed during the Civil War at Fort Ward Museum’s annual Christmas in Camp Open House. This popular family-oriented event features a patriotic Santa Claus, living history presentations, period music, Victorian decorations, refreshments, tours and crafts. The suggested donation is $2 for adults and $1 for children.
Soldier and civilian interpreters will welcome the public to winter camps and to the Museum, which will be decorated with festive greenery and a Victorian parlor tree. The Officers’ Hut will be the setting for soldiers opening Christmas boxes from home and sharing how they plan to observe the holiday. Soldier-led tours of the historic fort will be conducted, weather permitting.
A Civil War-era Santa Claus, dressed according to a wartime image popularized by artist Thomas Nast, will read “The Night Before Christmas” to children and hear their Christmas wishes. Santa will also visit troops in camp, just as he did on the 1863 cover of Harper’s Weekly. Youngsters can also learn about popular toys and amusements for Victorian children from a nineteenth-century schoolmarm, and make their own Christmas cards and ornaments.

Everybody wants into the Food Business

Right here in DC.

Article in todays Washington Post. I have to say it looks pretty cool.

Rocklands BBQ, our neighbors down the street, plan on having one.

On the Fly Near Gallery Place
A cute buglike truck with 14-foot-tall "wings" — like no other food vendor vehicle in the District — opened for business two weeks ago on the southwest corner of Eighth and H streets NW, near Gallery Place. Called On the Fly and owned by a group of local investors, it's the first of a planned fleet of battery-powered SmartKarts that will sell a variety of fresh fast food. It's also the latest addition to the District's new vendor program, which earlier this year ended a 10-year moratorium on issuing new licenses in an effort to expand street food beyond the hot dog.

Some items on the menu will be made by the company's executive chef, Jordan Lichman, a former sous-chef at the Inn at Little Washington. Others will come from area food businesses that have partnered with On the Fly. For example, at the Gallery Place truck, which has a Latin theme, the taco fillings are made by Lichman and the empanadas are made by a local chain, Julia's Empanadas.

We've had better empanadas than Julia's, but Lichman's soft flour tacos ($2 each) are terrific. Our favorite is the spicy chicken estofado, which is made with breast meat infused with the assertive flavors of four varieties of roasted Mexican chili peppers plus apples, cinnamon and thyme, all further flavored with a tangy chipotle chili aioli. The pork carnitas have a hint of orange and garlic and are topped with a fresh-tasting salsa. A vegetarian taco is stuffed with zucchini, red onion, red bell pepper and black beans.

On the Fly hopes to have two more SmartKarts operating downtown by the end of the year. One will have an Asian theme and will be partnered with Teaism; the other will sell food by Rocklands Barbeque & Grilling Co. Six more are to open by spring, and by the end of next year, 18 trucks — including one selling baked goods and espresso — will have rolled into position, says co-owner Gabe Klein, 36.

No small feat for a company that was organized less than a year ago. But as Klein puts it, "We are high-energy."

We thought our Smoker was Cool

From the Dvice website:

RUB is a trendy Manhattan-based barbecue joint. But its owner had a more ambitious vision — he wanted to combine BBQ and biking. So the restaurant commissioned this "mobile barbecue pit." It's an Easy Rider-style motorcycle with a smoker sidecar, created by the American Chopper team. It certainly is an original way to take a grill on the road, though we suspect that grilling in this baby while driving would cause a large explosion.

According to the restaurant, the motorcycle is not actually "road legal," so its owners won't be driving it cross-country when they open a new branch of their restaurant in Las Vegas. However, it's perfectly legal to use for smoking meat: a RUB spokeswoman suspects that restaurant owner Andrew Fischel will use it for events at the restaurant's new location. Since the bike cost "as much as a Bentley," we're glad that it will see some use, even if it's away from the highway. — S.E. Kramer

Meetups

There's a website that organizes group meetings with persons of common interest. In this case it's off the leash gathering of dogs and their masters. (I'm assuming the no leash thing is for the dogs). If you're not into dogs you can select your interest and this site will show you were that particular group is going to meet.

Perhaps we need a meetup for Mangoheads.

Trader Vic's

A lot of you probably don't remember Trader Vic's. Located right by the White House in a Major Hotel it was reported to be President Nixon's favorite restaurant (Maybe the Mai Tai's were the driving force behind Watergate). Gone for years the chain was considered a has-been. The concept is 73 years old. But it's resurfacing back in the main stream with it's newest operation in Las Vegas. Right next to Planet Hollywood it's a 15,000 sq ft operation. It's truly an icon in the tiki bar/restaurant business. They still have 19 operations around the world, 10 in the United States and 9 in the rest of the world including 4 in the United Arab Emirates.
