Old Time 4th Parade in Bethany

One of my favorite days is the 4th of July as I get to participate in the Bethany Beach small town parade. The whole town shows up for this deal, lining the streets with their kids, coolers and beach chairs waiting for the passing.

Kids on decorated bikes, politicians, police and firemen, bands and Mango Mike.

The Mango's staff hands out 5,000 colorful leis to every kid along the parade route (and some cute mom babes), so we're always one of the most popular floats in the parade.

Starts at noon on the 4th and winds thru the entire town over a 5 mile route.

This can't happen this close to the 4th of July

Bud & Bud Light Draft, Still on Happy Hour Mon-Friday 4-6:30 @ Alexandria Mango Mike's

An international beer war is brewing. On June 11,InBev, the behemoth formed by the 2004 merger of Brazilian brewer AmBev and Belgium-based InterBrew, offered a hefty premium to buy Anheuser-Busch, the dominant and iconic U.S. beer maker. InBev, which is run by a Brazilian, Carlos Brito, is eager to add Budweiser to its international portfolio of brands.

Anheuser-Busch's board and chief executive officer, August A. Busch IV, who represents the sixth generation of his family to run the brewer, dismissed the unwelcome offer as inadequate. Bud partisans, especially in and around St. Louis, have reacted with even more vigor. Both of Missouri's senators, Republican Kit Bond and Democrat Claire McCaskill, oppose the deal. McCaskillsays it is "patriotic" to do so. In a letter to Anheuser-Busch's board, he writes: "[D]o not hesitate to contact me to discuss ways that I and community leaders can work with you to improve the company without changing its ownership."

Opposition to InBev's takeover is rooted in national and regional pride and, perhaps more importantly, in overarching anxiety about the role of America in the global economy. So far this decade, two of America's big-three beer makers have been sold to foreign buyers. Second-place Miller was sold in 2002 toSABMiller, a company with roots in South Africa and headquarters in London. Canada's Molson acquired third-place Coors in 2005. (Combined, the big three have 78 percent of the U.S. market, with Anheuser-Busch holding down about 50 percent.)Officially, Anheuser-Busch's principal resistance is financial. On Thursday, it said that InBev's $65-per-share price "does not reflect the strength of Anheuser-Busch's global, iconic brands Bud Light and Budweiser, the top two selling beer brands in the world. … The proposal also undervalues the earnings growth actions that the company had already planned, which have significant potential for shareholder value creation; the company's market position in the United States, the most-profitable beer market in the world; and the high value of its existing strategic investments."

This rhetoric, which could merely be a negotiating ploy to get InBev to boost its offer, highlights the very reasons Anheuser-Busch is in danger of being taken over. Yes, the company does own iconic brands that have a global presence. But Bud is different from global brands such as Coca-Cola or McDonald's, which developed distinctly American consumer experiences that didn't face much resistance when they entered foreign markets. Today, they derive the vast majority of sales from abroad. But beer isn't an American invention, and in virtually every market, strong local brands proliferate. So while Anheuser-Busch sells Bud in scores of foreign markets and has linked up with brewers in Mexico, China, and India, the company has remained largely dependent on the massive U.S. market, where it has about a 50 percent market share. In the first quarter of 2008, 83 percent of the sales of Anheuser-Busch brands were in the United States.

Doggy Treats

Bill being the dog guy at Mango's will certainly appreciate this deal. Maybe we can freeze a MangoRita with this unit and make it a community ice cone.

From their website:

Your dog will enjoy frosty fun in the sun when you freeze his dog treats and toys in a long-lickin' chunk of ice.

Bored dogs are often destructive dogs...digging in the garden, chewing on trees and plants, gnawing on decks or outdoor furniture. Now there's a clever way to keep your dog happily occupied outside...just use the Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker to freeze Fido's favorite play toys and dog treats in a block of ice; he'll be licking it throughout the day, just to get to the dog treats! Meanwhile the Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker will keep him busy for hours as it hydrates him and cools him down.
The Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker secures the iced dog treats to a metal platform, so your dog can't drag the ice block around the yard or into the house. The Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker Kit includes the 96-oz. reusable freezing bucket with snap-on lid, plus stainless steel reservoir tray that stakes into the ground. Recipes included.

Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker features:

Keeps your dog hydrated and busy at the same time
Serving platform keeps iced dog treats out of the dirt
Bone-shaped cap bar holds ice block in place
Deep water reservoir collects water as it melts

World's most expensive Burger

The Cheeseburger in Mangoland is a steal during Happy Hour at Alexandria Mango Mike's Still only $5.95

Money can't buy you good taste but it can definitely buy you the most expensive burger in the world. Named simply, The Burger, it is selling at 95 pounds ($185) at a Burger King in the exclusive district of South Kensington on Wednesday.

The limited edition of the burger, which can be bought for two days only and has so far sold 50, is challenging the current Guinness Record for the most expensive burger, currently held by the American Double Truffle Burger which cost just 65 pounds ($127) in 1994.

Mark Dowding, a chef with Burger King(nyse: BKC - news people ) for the last 12 years and the creator of the burger, told the location had been chosen because "there are different pockets for different tastes. And we are sure this is an area of a lot of burger aficionados."

And the secret to its strong taste? "Its massaged Japanese Wagyu beef," Dowding said.

The burger, the size and looks of a regular whopper, is made out of ingredients from seven countries, from Japan to France.

Some restaurateurs dismissed the burger, spiced with organic white wine and pink Himalayan rock salt, as a "marketing stunt" comparing it with similar products launched by department stores like Selfridges and its 85 pound sandwich and Peter Jones's 50 pound cup of coffee pre-digested by a Civet cat.

But David Kisilevsky, vice president of marketing at the fast food restaurant, said "the burger is aimed at aficionados looking for the ultimate burger taste experience."

All proceeds from the sale of the burger will be donated to Help a London Child charity, which helps children experiencing abuse and poverty

One of my Top Favorite Bars

Seacrets at 49th Street and the Bay in Ocean City, Md is just over the top.

Opened about 25 years ago, it was initially a private club (due to a non-compete clause with a restaurant he had just sold across the street) with only about 10 seats at a tiki bar. The draw is the bay beach where you could lay on a raft (see first photo) and have the waitress bring your frozen pina colada out to you on the raft or you can sit at a bar stool and high top table right in the water. An immediate hit, it was only open for the first five years to residents of Ocean City as a private club.

Owner, Leighton Moore, has done an incredible job with this place. Over the years it has grown from a 10 seat tiki bar to a country of it's own. Every year he adds another piece of the puzzle. It's grown to an operation that can hold 5,000 people at over 15 bars, a nightclub (with a diamond plate dance floor with sub woofers located under the floor so you don't even need to dance you just vibrate across the dance floor like one of those football games).

All the exterior bars are surrounded by sand, which by the end of the evening is like concrete from the pounding of thousands of sandals. In the morning they bring out the garden roto tillers to work the sand into a beach consistency. We mop, they rototill.

Hundreds of palm trees are planted every year to verify his claim of "Seacrets located in Jamaica, USA". It's rumored that he spends over $400k every year in plantings. But judging by the amount of palm trees it could be entirely true.

To avoid traffic, cops, lines and cover fees it's best to visit by boat. You can either hang off a mouring in the bay and get a water taxi ride in, or if you a shallow draft you can dock right on the beach.

In my opinion this is the must see destination in Ocean City

Alexandria Police Foundation BBQ

While Mike was checking out the girls in bikinis at the beach, the Mango Mike's Alexandria crew was busy with BBQ for the annual Police Foundation BBQ/fundraiser.  Noi, Andres and I took the smoker and provided food for the event.   Afterwords, we got to check out some of the toys used by the Police, such as the armored tank pictured here.

Cruzin' Cooler Operator Gets Charged With DWI

Just in case you think this is an option for leaving Mango Mike's one evening.

We always see them scooting around the parking lot at a Jimmy Buffet concert, but yet to see one toolin' down Duke Street.

Here's the article from

WHITEHALL - In case you were wondering, a motorized cooler on wheels is a motor vehicle under state law.

A Whitehall man learned that on Memorial Day, when he was charged with driving while intoxicated after police pulled him over for swerving and driving on the sidewalk on a four-wheeled, motorized cooler known as a "Cruzin Cooler."

Leslie J. "Bomber" Marr, 57, could face felony DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle charges because of prior arrests and convictions in drinking-and-driving cases, said Whitehall Police Chief Richard LaChapelle.

The electricity-powered Cruzin Cooler that Marr was riding contained 14 beers, the chief said.

LaChapelle said Whitehall Police Patrolman Andrew Mija stopped Marr at about 7:45 p.m. after the officer saw Marr swerving and preparing to cross William Street on the motorized cooler.

The machine has handlebars, and its operator sits on a seat atop the cooler, LaChapelle said.

"We were told it can do up to 12 mph," the chief said.

Marr had apparently just left the nearby American Legion Post 83, but it was unclear where he was going, LaChapelle said. He was not headed toward his Lafayette Street home, and he refused to take a breath test, the chief said.

Marr had apparently been working at the American Legion post earlier in the day, according to police.

Marr was charged with misdemeanor counts of DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

He was released pending prosecution in Whitehall Village Court.

The Cruzin Cooler was seized by police, the chief said.

No listed phone number for Marr could be found Monday.

Washington County District Attorney Kevin Kortright said the scooter is considered a motor vehicle under state law.

"They tell us he's been riding around town on that cooler for years," Kortright said. "You can't cruise around on your cooler if you're intoxicated."

Cruzin Coolers generally run on 300-watt to 500-watt motors similar to those used on other motorized scooters, but there are some models that run on gasoline.

The company's Web site boasts the vehicles can travel up to 13 mph and pull up to 400 pounds. Price-wise, they begin at about $300.

They are legal in New York, according to the company's Web site.

Taste of Coastal Delaware

For the last nine years the Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce has hosted the Taste of Coastal Delaware. A plethora of restaurants gather to disperse their best wares to the paying public ($35 pp). Live entertainment included.

Although it was rather toasty on Sunday a nice breeze helped keep those under the tent relatively cool.

Mango's served Myers Rum Jumbo Caribbean Shrimp with Mango Salsa.

Sauteed on site by the Mangoettes, Cheslea and Danielle who are currently on the payroll at Mango's Bethany under the watchful eye of GH Tom Lannon.

Note: Chelsea is sporting the sunglasses as she received too much sun on the beach the previous day, and with swollen eyes she looks like she had a bout with Mohammed Ali.

Dumbest Man in the World

I usually don't make comments about a persons intellect or judgements, especially in marriage. But this guy has to be the dumbest man in the world.

Your married to Shania Twain for 14 years, but then you decide to have an "alleged" affair with her best friend. Now she's filing for a divorce.

What is this guy thinking?

He deserves the DAWA ("Dumb Ass of the Week Award")

On a totally 180 Degree opposite note Mrs. Mango and I are celebrating our Anniversary tomorrow of 20 blissful years. (Listening to a Shania Twain CD). Time flies in Mangoland.

Mango Mike's in Post

Not to be outdone by the Starboard in Dewey. Mango Mike's was featured in the Sunday Source section of the Washington Post 6.1.2008 for it's outrageous tropical drinks.

We'll try to get a link for the article for those of you not spending those big bucks on the Sunday Post. We know you're saving your bucks for that Shark Attack purchase.
